Equisetum arvense (Horse tail) young shoots
Therapeutic actions:
• Equisetum arvense (Horse tail young shoots) is a plant with astringent properties and is recommended as a remedy to stop bleeding.
• The plant's mineralising actions in healing bones and strengthening connective tissue are thought to be due to silicic acid. Silica is also important in bone structure by promoting the fixation and the maintenance of calcium inside the bone. It also has anti-inflammatory and restructuring properties (tendonitis / muscular tear / articular prosthetic surgery).
• It also has diuretic properties, and increases the urinary volume (key remedy in weight loss programs).
• It is also a vascular protector - Silica promotes the proliferation of elastic fibres (maintains the elasticity of arteries / veins).
Clinical conditions:
• Musculoskeletal: Osteoporosis, consolidation of fractures, anti-inflammatory / anti-rheumatism, muscular tear, tendonitis.
• Uro-genital: Urinary lithiasis, cystitis, urethritis, dysuria, hematuria, incontinence and bedwetting in children, menorrhea, leucorrhea, oedema, hydropsy, prostate enlargement.
• Circulatory: Hemostatic (hemorrhoids / nose bleeds).
• Digestive: Diarrhea, hematemesis.
• Respiratory: Hemoptysis, degeneration of pulmonary tissues, tuberculosis.
• Other: Alopecia, stretch marks, eczema, acne, skin eruptions (with and without itching), wound healing, ageing skin (builds collagen).
Consider in combination with:
• Cedrus libani, for dry eczema, itchy skin conditions
• Ilex aquifolium, if fissures are present
• Olea europaea, for scarring
• Rubus fructicosus, Alnus incana, Pinus montana, Vaccinium vitis-idaea, for osteoporosis
• Fraxinus excelsior, for gout
• Rubus idaeus, for heavy menses
• Abies alba, Pinus montana, Betula pubescens, for bone breaks and fractures

Adults and children > 12 years
• Depending on the patient and the problem being treated, 5-10 drops daily are recommended.
• To start with, 5 drops should be taken; this dose can be increased by one drop daily to reach a maximum of 15-20 drops daily, until the required and stable result is acquired. The dosage is then maintained for the remainder of the treatment period.
• The length of the treatment depends on the health problem and the gemmotherapy remedy used. Normally it is recommended that the treatment be continued for three (3) months. The treatment should last for a minimum of three weeks and can be repeated several times, allowing for example a treatment-free week between each course.
• One or two remedies, the most applicable, can be combined; more are not usually necessary. However, the complexes have the advantage of combining several extracts in one formula, thus facilitating the treatment. A complex may, if considered necessary, be combined with another complex or individual bud extract.
Clinical experience:
• Digitalis – Digitoxin: Do not use conjointly (may cause a loss of potassium due to its diuretic action – increasing the risk of digitalis toxicity)
• Equisetum arvense: High dosage may cause symptoms of nicotine overdose.
o Its use is proscribed for smokers and people using nicotine patches or gum.
• Lithium: Be prudent when using conjointly with Lithium (allopathic), the diuretic action of the Horse Tail may affect serum concentrations of the medication therefore causing a risk of intoxication.
