Eucalyptus Leaves have antiseptic, expectorant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties. They act as a decongestant and stimulate blood flow. The tannins found in eucalyptus have astringent properties that reduce mucous membrane inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. Eucalyptol, the chemical component of the oil, works to loosen phlegm. Eucalyptus enhances breathing, which makes it an effective remedy for asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, whooping cough and colds.
Peppermint Leaves act as an expectorant and decongestant. Peppermint is a cooling, relaxing herb that contains properties that help ease inflamed tissues, relieve pain, calm muscle and inhibit bacteria and microorganisms. It is used to help treat many respiratory ailments including asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis and coughs. Constituents of peppermint increase the production of saliva, causing frequent swallowing and suppressing the cough reflex. German Commission E has officially recognized peppermint's ability to reduce inflammation of nasal passageways.
Nettle leaves have astringent, expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties. They help relieve inflammation caused by allergic reactions and clear congestion in the nose and chest. Moreover, Nettle is considered an expectorant that expels phlegm from the stomach and clears mucus from the lungs, which is helpful in cases of respiratory problems.
Mullein Leaves contain a high proportion of mucilage which has a soothing and lubricating effect and saponins that help loosen mucus. They relieve bronchospasms associated with bronchitis, clear mucus and aid breathing. Mullein is effective as a treatment for asthma, colds and congestion, coughs, sore throats, tonsillitis and hoarseness. It also has analgesic, anti-inflammatory and bactericidal properties.
Pleurisy Root has antispasmodic and expectorant properties. It possesses a specific action on the lungs, assisting expectoration, subduing inflammation and exerting a general mild tonic effect on the system, making it valuable in all chest complaints. It is of great use in pleurisy, mitigating the pain and relieving the difficulty of breathing, and is also recommended in pulmonary catarrh.
Bulbus Fritillaria clears heat and transforms phlegm. It controls chronic phlegm formulation and dilates the bronchioles and is helpful in clearing nodules, swellings and abscesses, including lung abscesses. The active components of fritillaria are steroidal alkaloids that have sedative, anti-inflammatory, and phlegm resolving actions.
Menthol has a soothing and cooling effect that helps to relieve membrane irritation, sore throat and nasal congestion. It stimulates the secretory nerves and increases the respiratory rate.
