Also known as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, EDTA is well known for its metal-chelating abilities, extensively used for the treatment of binding and eliminating heavy metal ions such as mercury and lead out of the body. EDTA is a well known antimicrobial that has been extensively used to reduce the cross-linking and binding of the EPS from a variety of bacterium. Within the scope of biofilm treatment, EDTA has been utilized for the control of microorganisms and is often synergistically combined with other active biofilm agents.
